Week 7 Domain Names

During our second lecture of week 8 we talked a lot about domain names on the internet. It is imperative for a website to buy out all other variations of their domain name to ensure that other websites are not associating the company with filth. For example the website for BeatzBurne would be www.beatzburne.com but BeatzBurne would also be obligated to purchase .info, .net, .biz, etc, so that way other individuals do not create a separate BeatzBurne website that focuses on negative things such as porn. BeatzBurne would use .com because it is easier for frequent internet users to remember. Americans and other users around the world are very used to typing the company's name followed by a .com to find the website. If we used .info or .biz, which are both unrestricted domain names, most people would not find the website. However, if BeatzBurne was to buy .info and .biz we could redirect the website to www.beatzburne.com instead for those who typed in the wrong domain name to begin with.
Dealing with domain names can be tricky as we have learned in class, but with the advantage of WIPO it will be easier to keep predators away from destroying the good name of my company. However, if internet users decide to attack the company and buy, for example, www.beatzburne.pro it would cost 1.5k for one panelist at WIPO to review the case and 3k for three panelists to review the case. I think by the time BeatzBurne really reaches its full potential, IPv6 will be in use. Which is definitely an advantage because not only will it allow more devices to access the internet at one point in time, but also IPv6 has already been built into computers everywhere so the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 will be easy.
In order to buy www.beatzburne.com (our main website) and www.beatzburne.info, www.beatzburne.biz, www.beatzburne.net, www.beatzburne.org (to protect the integrity of the BeatzBurne name) the company would need to contact ICANN. ICANN is responsible for overseeing domain names and they distribute domain names.
